Code of Conduct
IxDA seeks to advance the discipline of interaction design by fostering a community of passionate individuals dedicated to moving our mission forward.
Our mission is broad and inclusive and our membership is passionate and diverse. While these attributes make IxDA a strong and vibrant community, they also bring the possibility of disagreement and cultural disconnect. As a volunteer-led organization we rely on the active participation of our community, which can only happen if all of our members feel safe and respected.
To achieve this goal, IxDA respectfully puts forward the following guidelines for our community, to be applied to both online and in-person interactions under our brand:
Be considerate and respectful
IxDA is a home for professionals and students from a mixture of experience levels, ages, races, genders, cultures and backgrounds. Your worldview may not match that of other members. Please be understanding of other perspectives and recognize that your own perspective may not be the default, or even the most common, in the larger community.
Be professional
A positive sign of a healthy professional community is that friendships and more casual relationships are created. IxDA is still a professional organization though, and professional behavior is always expected. Harassment and other exclusionary behavior are not acceptable. This includes but is not limited to:
- Violent threats or language directed against another person
- Sexist, racist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language
- Posting sexually explicit or violent material
- Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms
- Unwelcome sexual attention
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior
Assume good intentions & communicate directly
Many disagreements stem from simple misunderstandings. If you find behavior or comments offensive it may be that the person is unaware of the reaction s/he is creating. Tell them directly. Likewise, if someone informs you that your behavior is unwelcome, listen and engage with them to understand and resolve the issue.
Help us create a safe environment
If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, IxDA is committed to providing support and resolution. So, we ask that you take the following steps:
- In a physical setting such as a conference or local event, contact the event staff immediately. Attendees violating these rules may be asked to leave the conference without a refund at the sole discretion of the event organizers.
- Online – whether in a discussion forum, social space, or event – moderators may take action on any participant creating a hostile environment for others. Consequences can include removal from online communities and suspension of accounts.
Lastly, we welcome you to contact the IxDD Organization Board or any of our Chapter Leaders around the world to report an issue or to give feedback on our efforts to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all. They can be reached at:
